Firearms acquisition Certificate Training [page 5]

Enthusiastic members and their friends have been spending their Monday evenings in March and April the Simcoe Lounge learning the fine points of safe firearms handling. Under the tutelage of Capt Nick Mandryk of the Pistol Club, candidates have taken sixteen hours of training with rifles, shotguns and pistols, necessary to obtain a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC). The course culminates with a written and practical test applied by Maj Bill Danbrook, a provincial FAC examiner. FAC's have been required since 1 January 1979 if you wish to purchase or be in the possession of a legal firearm. Since then an FAC could be acquired by simply filing out a form, these FACs are valid until 1997. The course the members are taking meets current regulations, but this law is in the process of being revised. The current bill is expected to be replaced by C-68, which is currently at committee stage in Ottawa. Costs are $50.00 for the course, all materials and firearms are provided, and $30.00 for the provincial FAC test. A third course is scheduled for 29th May, if you are interested please call the front desk at 597-0286 leaving name and phone to register by Friday 26 May.
